👮 Tucker's New Approach to Loitering Enforcement

Tucker is updating its loitering ordinance to align with DeKalb County's recent changes. The key addition is a voluntary program allowing businesses to authorize police to enforce loitering laws on their property, even when staff aren't present to call 911.

Here's how it works: Businesses that opt in get city-provided "no loitering" signs to post. Police already know which spots are enrolled. If an officer sees someone hanging around who can't explain why they're there, they'll ask the person to leave. Refusing could mean arrest, though police say they'll offer help for mental health or other issues when it makes sense.

DeKalb Police Major Matthew Harden emphasized this is voluntary and doesn't change what legally counts as loitering. Mayor Anne Lerner pointed out that many gas station owners hesitate to call 911 about loitering because they worry about their own safety—this program sidesteps that problem.

The council will take a second look at the ordinance on March 9.

🏗️ Tucker Approves $2.5 Million Roundabout Contract Despite Safety Concerns

The Tucker City Council approved a $2.5 million contract with Vertical Earth Inc. to build two roundabouts on Idlewood Road at Fellowship Road and Sarr Parkway, but members raised concerns about student safety during construction.

Councilmember Alexis Weaver noted many students from Tucker and Stone Mountain middle schools walk along Idlewood Road, and council members questioned how raised crosswalks at the Fellowship Road roundabout would affect driver behavior.

Both roundabouts could be built simultaneously—Sarr Parkway taking one year and Fellowship Road nearly 18 months. Work hours will run 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Public Works Director Ishri Sankar said building both at once offers cost savings and scheduling benefits.

Mayor Anne Lerner said she contacted school officials about the construction and emphasized that future projects should address community concerns earlier in the design process, before going out to bid.

Other Council Updates from 2/9:

  • Appointed Beverly Echols to DeKalb County Women's Commission and Councilmember Weaver to DeKalb County Housing Working Group

  • Awarded $75,000 contract for Tucker Recreation Center window replacement

  • Approved $56,000 reimbursement to Tucker Summit Community Improvement District for intersection improvements
