❌ Tucker Council to Review Loitering Rules and New Streetlight Plan

Tucker's City Council met February 2nd to discuss two big items: updating how the city handles loitering and creating a new streetlight district. You can view the full agenda and meeting notes at https://www.tuckerga.gov/your-government/agendas/.

Loitering Changes

DeKalb County recently changed its loitering laws to include extended stay hotels, convenience stores, and other businesses. Since county police enforce city codes in Tucker, officials want to match those updates.

The new approach would let businesses sign up for a program that gives police clear authority to enforce "No Loitering" signs on their property. City staff suggest partnering with businesses to create standardized signs that officers can easily spot.

Streetlight District

The proposed district would cover 417 properties around the Tucker Summit area, roughly between Ponce de Leon Avenue and Lawrenceville Highway. The goal is to reduce crime and improve how the area looks by making all streetlights match.

The project would cost $1.7 million upfront and about $8,900 monthly to run. Property owners would pay annual fees to cover operating costs, while the Tucker Summit CID has asked the city to split the installation cost.

There's a catch: the petition doesn't have enough signatures under city rules. Staff recommend moving forward anyway by notifying property owners and holding a hearing, with a possible vote in March.

The council also heard about the city's clean financial audit and updates on trail and road projects.

🚨 Bomb Threat Evacuates Tucker High During Basketball Game

Tucker High School evacuated Friday night after DeKalb County 911 received a bomb threat during a girls varsity basketball game. No devices were found and no one was injured.

The game stopped abruptly with about four minutes left in the third quarter, Tucker leading 29-18. An announcer told everyone to leave the gym immediately, and DeKalb School District Police cleared the building while officers and K-9 units searched the entire school. Nothing suspicious was found.

The district said everyone evacuated "safely and calmly" following safety protocols. The investigation into who made the threat is ongoing.

The evacuation happened on senior night, and the evening was supposed to celebrate head coach James Hartry's final home game. Hartry has been with Tucker for nearly 30 years—starting as an assistant in 1997 and serving as head coach for 26 years. He's retiring after this season.

Hundreds of people had packed the gym for the occasion, including some who'd driven nearly 10 hours to attend. The halftime ceremony honoring Hartry's career never happened.

Both the girls and boys games will be rescheduled. Stay safe, Tucker!

🤢 DeKalb Cleaning Up 13,000-Gallon Sewer Spill in Tucker

DeKalb County Watershed is responding to a major sewer spill that dumped 13,000 gallons into Henderson Mill Creek near Northlake Center Drive.

Debris clogged an 8-inch sewer main on Wednesday. Crews tried to clear the blockage by pressure-washing between two manholes but couldn't get it open. DeKalb set up a bypass pump to contain the spill while they work on repairs. Crews are still on site clearing the blockage and cleaning up.

The city says they're working to restore service and address the environmental impact.
