🏠️ City Council Considers Opting Out of State Homestead Exemption

The city of Tucker is weighing whether to opt out of Georgia's new floating homestead exemption law (HB 581) before the March 1 deadline. The law, approved by voters in November 2024, caps property assessment increases at the inflation rate. While nearby cities like Brookhaven, Chamblee, and Decatur are considering opting out, Tucker's situation is unique because it already has a homestead exemption in its charter that freezes home assessments at purchase-year values.

City Manager John McHenry and Mayor Frank Auman noted that while opting out could provide more flexibility in balancing commercial and residential taxes in the future, the current exemption isn't likely to change since it would require both state legislative approval and a city referendum. The council passed a motion to advertise and schedule hearings on the matter, keeping their options open while they continue discussions.

🏢 January 13th City Council Meeting Updates

In addition to discussing Georgia's floating homestead exemption law, Tucker City Council tackled other areas of business:

  • 📽️ Tucker passed a new ordinance that requires filming permits for shoots within city limits

  • 🅿️ The city is considering parking time limits on Main Street to free up spaces for business customers and redirect long-term parking to nearby lots

  • ➡️ Council reviewed a rezoning request at 5950 Hugh Howell Drive from neighborhood shopping to local commercial

  • Council approved higher tax rates for blighted property at 4971 Lavista Road to incentivize property improvements
