๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ Tucker Cracks Down on Loitering โ€” With Some Pushback

Tucker's City Council unanimously passed an updated loitering ordinance at its March 9 meeting, along with a new business partnership program to help enforce it.

The revised ordinance defines loitering as being somewhere "in a manner not usual for law-abiding individuals" โ€” language that raised eyebrows from Councilmember Alexis Weaver, who worried the definition was too vague. Police Major Matthew Harden acknowledged enforcement would come down to individual officer judgment, though he noted that not every interaction would lead to a citation or arrest.

Under the new program, businesses can voluntarily sign up and post city-provided signage (the city is buying 50 signs for $3,000). If an officer spots someone loitering at a participating location, they'll first ask the person to explain why they're there. Those who can't give a reason will be asked to leave โ€” and could face arrest if they refuse. The ordinance mirrors changes DeKalb County made last year and covers spots like convenience stores and extended stay motels.

Weaver pushed back on the broader conversation, urging the council not to conflate homelessness with criminal behavior. Mayor Anne Lerner agreed, noting that frustration is coming from some business owners โ€” not the whole community โ€” who say they're losing customers.

Also at the meeting:

  • Downtown compactor district โ€” A new special district aimed at reducing overflowing dumpsters and improving trash coordination downtown.

  • Idlewood Road roundabouts โ€” $78K contract awarded to Kimley-Horn & Associates for construction administration.

  • Pipe restoration โ€” $231K contract to Utility Asset Management for trenchless pipe repair on Canadian Way and Antelope Lane.

  • Henderson Park master plan โ€” $89K contract awarded to Cooper Carry to develop the park's master plan.

๐Ÿฅ˜ New West African Restaurant Opens in Tucker

Tucker has a new dining option worth checking out โ€” Le Nouveau Maquis African Restaurant has opened at Northlake Festival shopping center (4073 Lavista Rd), and the community is already buzzing about it.

The West African spot, which has an established location on Memorial Drive, held a ribbon cutting with the City of Tucker recently. Early visitors are raving about dishes like peanut stew with fufu and seafood fritters, with locals noting the food runs on the spicy side. The restaurant also participated in Tucker Restaurant Week back in February.

Long-time Tucker residents will recognize the space as the former Mandarin Palace location. Here's hoping this one sticks around โ€” the early reviews suggest it just might.
