🥳 Tucker Town Green Set to Transform Downtown This Fall
Get ready, Tucker! Tucker's new 2-acre Town Green is on track to open this fall, promising to be a "game changer" for downtown. The $8.6 million project off Main Street will feature water features, play areas, walking paths, and a pavilion for performances.
Mayor Frank Auman says it will give Tucker something most cities don't have – "a signature downtown park" in an authentic railroad town setting. The green space will even host official watch parties for three UGA football games this fall.

Local business owners are excited about the potential foot traffic boost. "There's nothing that draws people to Main Street, except for the businesses," says Corner Cup owner Michael Vorndran. "I think it's going to end up bringing more people down during the day to just hang out."
Despite some surprise costs along the way ($152,000 for a water line and $83,000 for stormwater work), the project stayed on budget. The city's even adding a sleek steel "TKR" sculpture for $75,000 - perfect for 📸 selfies.
Construction began in October 2024, and City Manager John McHenry says officials are pleased with the progress. The project includes land the city bought from the Cofer family behind Local No. 7 restaurant for $1.2 million in 2021.
Mark your calendars for this fall! Town Green will be a defining centerpiece for Tucker’s community to enjoy together. 🎉

🛣️ Brockett Road Sidewalk Hits Snag with Georgia Power
Tucker's plans for a new sidewalk on Brockett Road got delayed at Monday's city council meeting. The city had to pull a utility relocation agreement with Georgia Power from the agenda after last-minute issues came up.
The proposed sidewalk would run along the east side of Brockett Road from Railroad Avenue to Comanche Drive. Two Georgia Power poles need to be moved to make room, but the city and utility company couldn't finalize the details in time.
"We're looking forward to having those installed on the east side of Brockett, but we've had a little back and forth that we thought was going to be finalized with our partners at Georgia Power," City Manager John McHenry explained.
In other business, the council approved new rules for coin-operated arcade games and similar devices. These businesses now can't set up within 100 yards of churches or homes, or within 200 yards of schools.
Tune in for updates from the next city council meeting on September 8.

🧑🏭 Hormel Foods Cuts 135 Jobs at Tucker Plant
Hormel Foods is laying off 135 workers at its Tucker facility on Montreal Industrial Way, citing the end of bacon production at the plant. The company says aging equipment and the cost of upgrades drove the decision.
The Tucker plant, which opened in 1969, is Hormel's only Georgia facility and currently employs 400 people. It produces precooked bacon, Hormel chili, and Dinty Moore stew. Bacon production will move to other Hormel facilities, but the plant will stay open. The facility made headlines in May when it had to recall over 256K pounds of beef stew contaminated with wood.
Workers will be let go during a two-week period starting October 26.
"When one door closes, another opportunity will open up," one worker told reporters outside the plant. "I wish the best for everybody who was affected by it."
