🚒 DeKalb County Eyes Three New Fire Stations
DeKalb County is moving forward with plans to build three fire stations in Tucker, Decatur, and Lithonia at a projected cost of $26.5 million — though commissioners deferred the contract vote at their April 28 meeting.
For Tucker residents, that means a long-overdue upgrade to Fire Station No. 5. The current station on Lawrenceville Highway has been in service since 1952 and will be replaced by a new facility on Cowan Road. The site isn't starting from scratch — Tucker and DeKalb County officials kicked off demolition of a former public health building there back in July 2023 to make way for the new station.
The Tucker project carries an $8.2 million price tag and is notably the second of five new fire stations planned countywide, all funded through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) dollars — meaning no new taxes to foot the bill.

💵 Tucker Faces a Leaner Budget — and Some Hard Choices
Tucker City Council is facing some tough budget choices now that federal pandemic-era funding has dried up. At a Monday work session, council members debated how to stretch shrinking dollars across roads, trails, parks, sidewalks, and more — with a formal vote on the budget set for June 8.
The big tension: several council members want to fast-track the South Fork Peachtree Creek trail project, but doing so means bumping something else down the schedule. One casualty could be the Hugh Howell and Rosser Road intersection rebuild — though that idea met pushback from members who see it as a safety priority.
The numbers tell the story: the city expects about $1.6 million less in revenue next year compared to this year, and its reserves have already taken a hit — dropping from $13.25 million last June to a projected $7.69 million this June.
Mayor Anne Lerner summed up the mood plainly: "We cannot do everything."
Residents can weigh in at a public hearing on May 11, and another work session is set for May 4 at 6 p.m. The full draft budget is available at tuckerga.gov.
