๐Ÿ’ DeKalb Police Set Up Memorial for Fallen Officer David Rose

DeKalb County Police have established a public memorial for Officer David Rose, who died in the line of duty responding to a shooting at the CDC on Aug. 8. Rose served at the North Central Precinct in Tucker. CDC employees believe Rose saved lives during the incident.

A bouquet of flowers is placed at a memorial honoring fallen DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose outside of police headquarters in Tucker on Monday, Aug. 11, 2025.

Rose, who started with DeKalb Police in September 2024 and graduated from the academy in March, lived in DeKalb County and had family ties to Emory University. During his academy graduation speech, he said graduates "wanted to serve" and "be the person who runs towards danger when others run away."

The memorial, featuring a patrol vehicle and condolence sign, was set up at police headquarters in Tucker through Monday evening. A GoFundMe for Rose's family has raised over $462K.

The Uvalde Foundation for Kids plans to award Rose a posthumous heroism commendation.

"The actions of Officer Rose were nothing short of heroic. There is no question that his selflessness and dedication to duty, manifested this day into brave actions which saved countless lives, including Emory students and citizens. Our hearts ache for the family, colleagues, and community of the fallen officer who made the ultimate sacrifice today at Emory University. This brave individual ran towards danger, placing themselves between an armed assailant and vulnerable students, embodying the highest ideals of courage and service. Their heroism will not be forgotten." - Uvalde Foundation For Kids Founder Daniel Chapin

๐ŸชŸ Tucker Council Approves New Drive-Thru Rules, Creates Marshal's Office

Tucker City Council ended its six-month moratorium on new drive-throughs Monday, approving some regulations while postponing others for more review.

The council updated the city's zoning rules, removing drive-thru options in certain districts and requiring them along Hugh Howell Road near Fuller Way. They also clarified that drive-thru restaurants include businesses with only pickup windows.

However, the council held off on stricter rules about distance requirements from residential areas and pedestrian crossings. The hesitation stemmed from concerns that late additions to the proposed regulations would effectively ban all new drive-throughs in the city except those already operating. Community Development Director Courtney Smith said this gives everyone more time to discuss potential changes through another public process.

"I think this is a really good example of a council not necessarily agreeing on everything, but taking what we do mostly agree on and moving forward with it," said Councilmember Amy Trocchi.

The council also approved creating a new marshal's office in a 6-1 vote, with Councilmember Alexis Weaver dissenting. The marshals will replace four part-time bailiffs and provide security at city meetings, events and properties. The change will cost $200K annually plus $202K in startup costs.

Currently, DeKalb County handles policing for Tucker. The marshals won't stop crimes in progress but would call 911 instead, officials said. Some council members expressed concerns about legal liability and what marshals can actually do.
