🚓 Tucker Gets $100K Boost for More Police Patrols

DeKalb Commissioner Robert Patrick gave $100K to the Tucker-Northlake Community Improvement District to hire more off-duty cops for the area.

The CID, which represents commercial property owners in downtown Tucker, Northlake, and along Lawrenceville Highway, has been running an off-duty officer patrol program since 2018. But with ongoing break-ins on Main Street and crime spilling into residential areas, they needed backup.

"Business owners tend not to talk about crime, but the impact is real," said CID Executive Director Matthew Lee. "As you can see from Nextdoor, and the report on stolen lawn equipment, it's spilling over into residential areas."

The CID already dipped into its own reserves last year, spending $100K to double their patrols during the summer crime surge. Now Patrick's funding will extend coverage to both commercial and residential areas in unincorporated DeKalb County.

While Lee acknowledges more officers won't solve everything, it's a step in the right direction for what's become a quality-of-life issue for Tucker residents and businesses.

Patrick hopes this could serve as a model for other parts of the county, though he notes CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson is already working to hire more full-time officers with better pay.
