🏓 Tucker’s Pickleball Court Saga Continues
The City Council meeting on February 24th centered on the controversial proposal to build a 12-court pickleball complex at Tucker Recreation Center. If you’re not up to speed, here’s what’s happening:
Local residents are opposing the $3M project due to concerns about noise, light pollution, and traffic. The pickleball courts and lighting would cost $650K, while the rest would cover parking expansion and stormwater improvements.
Pickleball is the recreation center's most popular activity, with 500-600 league participants.
Parks Director Rip Robertson showed a video demonstrating special screening material that could be installed around the courts to reduce noise, but opponents weren’t convinced.
The project was in development since 2022, but the first community meeting wasn't held until November 2024. Critics argue they were excluded from the planning process until after it was underway.
Councilmember Alexis Weaver has allied with the opposition, while Councilmember Amy Trocchi emphasized the need to keep an open mind and find compromise.
Trocchi requested an analysis of alternative locations and suggested homeowners should have researched potential developments before purchasing nearby properties.
Resident Heather Hale has threatened legal action if the project proceeds.
No final decision was made at the meeting.
What are your thoughts about the pickelball court proposal?
In other business, the council voted to opt out of the state's floating homestead tax exemption, with Mayor Frank Auman casting the sole dissenting vote.
