🅿️ Tucker Hits Pause on Parking Fines

Downtown Tucker has a parking problem — businesses are losing customers and spots are hard to find — but the city council has decided to hold off on fines and time limits for now. Instead, the focus will be on better signage, improved striping and lighting, and making the public aware of existing spots (like the city hall annex on First Avenue) that many don't know about.

Mayor Anne Lerner pointed out that while locals know about the annex parking, the wider public doesn't. A Fourth Street reclamation project is also in the works that would add 17-18 new spaces near Main Street, with construction possibly starting next year.

The council hasn't ruled out an ordinance down the road. If they revisit it, expect a 2-hour limit (not 4) and lower fines than the originally proposed $75.

Councilmember Vinh Nguyen pushed hard for faster action, calling it a "three or four-year journey" and warning that "indecision is a decision" when it comes to business owners' livelihoods. Councilmember Cara Schroeder agreed, saying 17 or 20 extra spots alone won't solve the problem. Councilmember Alexis Weaver was the dissenting voice, saying she wouldn't support moving forward with an ordinance until the city takes several other steps first.

Other business from the Feb 23 work session:

  • County property transfers — Tucker is working to take ownership of 40+ properties still under DeKalb County's name. Twelve parcels have been approved for transfer; 16 more are under review. Potential uses include greenspace, parks, parking, and downtown redevelopment.

  • Transportation & trails master plan — The council reviewed updates focused on connectivity and safer streets, but asked for clearer definitions of "complete streets" for Tucker. Final adoption has been pushed to April or later.

🍔 Whataburger Eyes Tucker Location on Hugh Howell Road

Whataburger is coming to Tucker! The Texas-based burger chain plans to take over the vacant Wendy's spot at 4453 Hugh Howell Road, with indoor seating and a drive-thru. Local franchisee Made to Order Holdings is seeking a Special Land Use Permit from the city to make it happen.

Heads up — the city has tightened its rules on drive-thrus along Hugh Howell Road, so the permit isn't a sure thing yet. A community meeting was held Feb. 24 at the Tucker-Reid H. Cofer Library for residents to weigh in.

Whataburger has been pushing to expand across Georgia, with a goal of 50 new locations by 2030 — though two Georgia locations have already closed since the expansion began.
