Smoke Rise Elementary in Tucker hosted a Walk to School Day event last Friday, March 14. Students, parents, and local officials gathered at the Publix parking lot on Hugh Howell Road before walking the half-mile route to the school together.
Principal Dr. Krystye Tatum emphasized the event's focus on teaching students about safe routes to school. "At Smoke Rise Elementary School, we take student safety seriously," she said.
The walk featured special guests including DeKalb County School District Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton, Tucker Mayor Frank Auman and his wife Gaye, and members of the Tucker City Council. Dr. Horton noted that the event promotes both safety and healthy lifestyles while creating bonding opportunities for the school community.

💗 Local Restaurant's Compassion Shines in Pittie's Final Moments
A heartwarming act of kindness from Village Burger's staff brought comfort to a family saying goodbye to their beloved 15-year-old pittie battling cancer. After ordering a special bacon cheeseburger as their dog's final meal, the family was touched when restaurant staff "supersized" the burger and provided an "extra" ice cream treat.
"In the picture you can see she can't believe her luck," SoRelle Brown shared. The elderly pittie, whose favorite things were "food and new friends," enjoyed both during her special farewell visit.
The family expressed deep gratitude for creating such a meaningful memory during a difficult time. "Our family appreciated the sweet understanding and generosity of the team," they wrote, calling the Village Burger staff "hometown heroes" whose compassion made a difference when it mattered most.
The Tucker community responded with overwhelming support, reminding us all how our pets "pack a lifetime of love in the too-short time we have together.” 😭
Special shout-out to SoRelle Brown for sharing this beautiful story with the Tucker community. Sending big hugs to her and her family. 💙

He enjoys simple pleasures like laying in the sunshine and chewing on toys, sometimes chasing them. Toys, hugs. It's all good with Jiko.
