🏓 Tucker's Pickleball Debate Heats Up as Supporters Make Their Case

Pickleball supporters packed Tucker's March 10 city council meeting to advocate for the proposed complex at the recreation center, pushing back against weeks of opposition from nearby residents.

Supporters urged the council to make a decision on the $3 million project, which includes 12 courts costing about $650K, plus parking improvements and stormwater control. One pickleball player, Sheryl Cherico, expressed concern that the ongoing debate was dividing the community: "If this doesn't come to a vote, we're all going to hate each other."

The council is currently exploring alternative locations at Henderson Park, though this has raised concerns from the Tucker Youth Soccer Association, which uses fields there for its growing program of 2.1K participants.

While opposition has focused on noise, light pollution and traffic concerns, there seems to be some willingness to compromise. Heather Hale, who previously threatened litigation over the project, now says she supports pickleball courts, just "not at the expense of green space."

No vote has been scheduled yet as city staff continue evaluating options.

🏢 March 10th City Council Updates

  • Council approved a $92K contract to relocate Henderson Park playground as part of the $4 million Lake Erin Dam repair project.

    • “[The playground structures] will be reinstalled at two locations, one at Church Street Greenspace and one at Henderson Park (east) next to the tennis courts.”

  • Held first reading for rezoning Chamblee Tucker Road properties for single-family homes.

  • Held first reading for an ordinance to amend city zoning code. See the full list of proposed changes here.

Tucker Treasures 💝

Tucker Today partners with Dekalb County Animal Shelter. Every week, we highlight local animals looking for their forever home.

In this week’s edition of Tucker Treasures, we’re featuring Kanaan!

Kanaan (male); 3yrs old, 56lbs

“Meet Kanaan the cutie! Kanaan was out in the yard and he was super sweet, easy and gentle; he kissed another dog through the fence. He wanted loves from everyone and enjoyed playing with toys. He was low to medium energy with us, easy on the leash and easy with treats.

He is house trained, knows sit and likely some other stuff too. Just a regular love-bug with plenty of kisses to go around. We love him and so will you!”

Spread the word about Kanaan! Email [email protected] or call 404.294.2165 for more info.

Not sure if you want to adopt? Come take a pup for a fun day with the Dog for the Day program. This program is a great way to borrow a canine companion for a hike, a trip to the park, or a lazy day at home. Email [email protected] for more information.
