🥒 Community Debates Over New Pickleball Courts

On November 7th, the community held a public meeting about the city’s plan to add a 12-court pickelball complex at the Rec Center. This proposal has sparked major debate, and the community meeting was packed with both opponents and supporters.

 Concerns from Opponents:

  • Many expressed concerns about noise and disrupting the quiet neighborhood.

  • Some residents worry about the cost of the $3.25 million project, arguing it benefits a small group.

  • Others pointed out potential drainage issues and how the courts might affect nearby properties, especially those on the south side.

 Reasons from Proponents:

  • Supporters argue that pickleball promotes health, fitness, and community.

  • They believe the new courts will align with the Rec Center's mission and provide a valuable recreational option for all ages.

  • Many emphasized the sport’s positive social impact and expressed hope for a solution that balances the needs of both players and residents.

⏸️ The project is now on pause. Next steps: city staff will meet & review feedback, determine their own next steps, present to council, and council will vote (or not) on changes.

🏢 City Council Meeting Updates (11/12)

  • ⏸️ Pickleball Project on Pause - Mayor Auman confirmed the 12-court pickleball complex at Tucker Rec Center is on hold after public pushback. No contract for the project was on the meeting agenda.

  • Sewer System Upgrades - DeKalb County presented upcoming sewer projects, including new lift stations and force mains to reverse sewer flow into Gwinnett. Efforts will minimize impact on Henderson Park.

  • 💵 Blight Tax Ordinance - A new ordinance was discussed that would increase property taxes on blighted properties and offer reductions for properties being rehabilitated.

  • 🌳 City Design Standards - TSW provided updates for city signage and landscaping design standards, pending final approval.
