🎨 Council Awards Contract for New Town Green Sculpture

The council awarded a $75K contract to Atlanta sculptor Phil Proctor for the Tucker Town Green's centerpiece - a steel sculpture featuring the letters TKR. The design will be "bold, playful, and eye-catching" with a vertical orientation perfect for selfies.

Cool touch: it'll incorporate material from old Tucker railroad tracks donated by a local business. 🛤️

Phil Proctor is a sculptor based in Atlanta who specializes in public art displays. Council started the search for an artist back in February for the $5.6M Town Green project, and selected Proctor after considering 3 proposals.

🌶️ Tucker’s Pickleball Controversy Continues

The Tucker City Council voted 4-3 to rebid the Pickleball project at Tucker Recreation Center - but not without some drama. Mayor Frank Auman added the item to the agenda at the beginning of the meeting, catching council members and the public off guard.

The Split Vote:

  • For rebidding: Mayor Auman, Roger Orlando, Cara Schroeder, Vinh Nguyen

  • Against: Alexis Weaver, Virginia Rece, Amy Trocchi

What's the Fuss About? This $3 million project has been brewing for over two years. The original plan called for 12 dedicated Pickleball courts, but opponents - mainly neighbors - have been flooding city meetings with complaints about noise. The city even paid for a sound study and planned noise barriers, but opponents hired their own experts to dispute the findings. Some have threatened lawsuits.

The project seemed dead last month when the city wouldn't award a contract due to licensing questions with the winning bidder. But with municipal elections coming up, it's back on the table.

Council members weren't happy about the surprise agenda addition. Even Amy Trocchi, who's has sparred with Alexis Weaver over pickleball before, agreed the timing was not ideal. Both Trocchi and Weaver represent the district with the Rec center and promised constituents they'd get advance notice of any pickleball moves.

Mayor Auman defended the decision, saying that he had considered having the city manager rebid the contract without any council vote at all. He continues to receive “emails from all sides making all sorts of accusations."

What's Next? The public won't get to weigh in until July (unless the council allows comments at the June 23 meeting). With election season heating up, expect pickleball to be a hot campaign topic.
