🚧 City Council Meeting Roundup - May 27th

The Tucker City Council approved advertising a millage rate that means slightly lower taxes for residents who use the homestead exemption. We're talking about an $8 yearly savings – not huge, but still something.

Hugh Howell Road Safety Gets Attention: The council heard about a major study on Hugh Howell Corridor that found some sobering statistics: 725 crashes over five years, including 179 injuries and 3 deaths. The good news? There's a $12.7 million wish list of improvements, and the city's setting aside $1 million in the upcoming budget for some quick fixes like upgrading school flashers and fixing turn lanes.

Johns Homestead Historic Push: Tucker's working to get Johns Homestead (that historic house at 3017 Lawrenceville Highway) on the National Registry of Historic Places. Built around 1829, it's one of DeKalb County's oldest homes with a complicated but fascinating history involving Revolutionary War veterans, the Civil War, and some difficult conversations about slavery that the city wants to address honestly. Other Business:

  • Approved $67K for road drainage repairs around town

  • Held a closed-door meeting with the Downtown Development Authority (no action taken)

  • Budget discussions continue, with the first reading scheduled for June 9

The next council meeting is June 9 at 7 p.m. at City Hall if you want to catch the budget talks!
