๐ŸŽ’ Tucker Residents Push Back on School Closure Plans

Emotions ran high at Monday's Tucker City Council meeting as residents voiced concerns over DeKalb County Schools' plan to close Midvale and Brockett elementary schools and expand Livsey Elementary to absorb the students.

"People move to Tucker for our small neighborhood schools," said Midvale parent Stacy De Jesus, warning that a "mega-elementary school" could change the character of the community. Councilmember Virginia Rece echoed that, noting Tucker is a walkable community โ€” something that could be lost if neighborhood schools close.

District officials pushed back, saying the system is paying to maintain 18,000 empty seats across DeKalb. "Doing nothing is really not an option," said COO Eric Hofstetter. The district is built for 110,000 students but only has 92,000 โ€” a gap expected to grow by 1,000โ€“2,000 kids a year.

No vote was taken. The plan is still being finalized, with a school board vote not expected until fall.

In other council action, members voted to install streetlights in the North-South Royal Industrial area after concerns about rising crime. They also unanimously named the Fitzgerald Park playground after Olivia Nicole Hayes, a sixth-grader killed in a 2008 school bus accident. Her mother said simply, "The park was her place." ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

Lastly, the council approved a vocational health training school on LaVista Road and a $1.9 million public works facility on Hammermill Road.
