🗣️ DeKalb School Board Faces Backlash Over Closure Plans
At its April 20 meeting, the DeKalb County School Board heard an earful from parents frustrated with the district's Student Assignment Project (SAP) — a sweeping effort to close, consolidate, and redistrict schools across the county in response to declining enrollment.
Twenty speakers showed up to voice concerns, many representing Oak Grove Elementary, which is among the schools slated for closure. Parents questioned the data being used, raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest with a third-party vendor, and pushed back on what they called a rushed process with no clear funding plan.
Outside the meeting, about 50 parents and kids rallied in protest, with signs and honking cars in tow.

Superintendent Norman Sauce offered little clarity on next steps, saying a detailed timeline would come in the next two to three weeks as the district works through tens of thousands of pieces of community feedback. At least one board member, Whitney McGinniss, said she wasn't comfortable heading into summer without more resolution for anxious families.
